The San Lorenzo de El Escorial Auditorium Theatre becomes the centrepiece of a major musical event with the reunion of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and the acclaimed maestro Pablo Heras-Casado, internationally recognised as a conductor of dazzling versatility and named ‘Conductor of the Year’ by Musical America.
The programme is devoted entirely to one of the most formidable masterpieces of the late Romantic repertoire: Symphony No. 6 in A minor, known as the ‘Tragic’. Composed between 1903 and 1904 whilst Mahler was at the height of his creative maturity as head of the renowned Vienna Hofoper, the score encapsulates a profound existential duality. A heart-rending musical prophecy, famed for the brutal hammer blows of its final movement, which symbolise the blind reversals of fate.
