Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov delves into the darkest corners of human ambition and the psychology of power. Inspired by Alexander Pushkin's celebrated drama of the same name, the work recreates the harshness of Imperial Russia, portraying the loneliness of the visionary ruler, the delusions of a paranoid tsar, and the violent conflict of a people seduced by false prophets.
