Francesco Cavalli’s fascinating Baroque opera La Calisto plunges us into a whirlwind of mythology, eroticism and divine passions, in which the gods prove to be just as earthly and capricious as mortals themselves. With David Alden’s bold stage direction and Maestro Ivor Bolton’s energetic musical direction at Teatro Real.
Directly inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this spicy and brilliant comedy unfolds when the mighty Jupiter disguises himself as the goddess Diana to circumvent the vow of chastity made by the beautiful nymph Callisto, unleashing the relentless fury and jealousy of his wife, Juno.
