In France in the 1830s, a veritable cult of personality developed around E. T. A. Hoffmann, who remained one of the country’s most popular and influential writers for the rest of the century. He was admired for the way in which the ‘fantastic’—the supernatural—bursts into reality in his short stories and novels, blurring the boundaries between inner and outer life. But Hoffmann’s own personality was equally fascinating, as he embodied the quintessential Romantic artist, tormented from within; from the outset, his early biographers tended to imbue his life with legendary qualities. It is therefore hardly surprising that the works of several younger French authors soon came to feature not only characters inspired by Hoffmann’s writings, but also Hoffmann himself: the real-life poet became a literary figure.
