Giuseppe Verdi's opera Nabucco is a historical drama that marked a turning point in opera. This production at the Teatro Real is conducted by Nicola Luisotti and Andreas Homoki, and features an impressive cast led by George Gagnidze, Michael Fabiano, and Saioa Hernández.
Based on a poignant passage from the Old Testament, the plot delves into the conflicts of a family torn apart by ambition, and the resistance of the Hebrew people against Babylonian oppression, which in this production is transformed into the conflict between Italians and Austrians in the 19th century. The opera's climactic moment, the "Chorus of the Slaves," "Va, pensiero," made Verdi an unwitting hero of the Italian Risorgimento.
