Georg Friedrich Händel’s striking opera Orlando is a profound exploration of the human mind. Under the musical direction of Ivor Bolton, stage director Claus Guth draws inspiration from the film Taxi Driver, starring Robert De Niro, to portray Orlando as a war veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress, with Christophe Dumaux as Orlando, Anna Prohaska as Angelica, and Anthony Roth Costanzo as Medoro.
Based on Ludovico Ariosto’s famous epic poem Orlando Furioso, the opera depicts the destructive spiral of jealousy and alienation experienced by a soldier unable to reintegrate into society after returning from war, culminating in a spectacular and famous scene of madness.
