Antonín Dvořák's Rusalka is a moving opera brimming with magic and mythology, presented at the Teatro Real in a delicate production directed by Ivor Bolton and Christof Loy. The stellar cast includes Asmik Grigorian as the nymph Rusalka, Eric Cutler as the Prince, Karita Mattila as Cizi Knezna, and Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev as Vodnik, among others.
This somber lyric drama draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid to tell the story of a water nymph who sacrifices her voice to a witch in order to become human and win the love of a prince. The opera features the poignant "Moon Song," one of the most celebrated arias in the history of opera.
