Brokeback Mountain

A world premiere at the Teatro Real based on the Oscar-winning film. Charles Wuorinen’s Brokeback Mountain stands as one of the most ambitious contemporary works of the 21st century, drawing parallels with the tragic dimension of great myths such as Tristan and Isolde. Directed by Titus Engel and Ivo van Hove, with a libretto by Annie Proulx, author of the original novel, this production showcases the relentless and dangerous force of nature that forms the backdrop to the heart-wrenching story of the cowboys Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, played by Daniel Okulitch and Tom Randle.

Set in Wyoming, USA, in the early 1960s, the opera tells the story of the young men Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, who meet when they are hired by the foreman Aguirre to tend the cattle, isolated in the inhospitable mountain landscape. Amidst this imposing solitude, a deep and clandestine love blossoms between them, which will clash head-on with the rigid conventions of a deeply intolerant rural society.
