In Street Scene, Kurt Weill sought to create a genuinely American opera by blending Central European tradition, the energy of Broadway and the richness of African-American music. Tim Murray and John Fulljames direct this Teatro Real production, featuring over a hundred performers, which brings to life the New York suburbs of the 1940s. Patricia Racette, Paulo Szot, Joel Prieto and Mary Bevan lead this vast mosaic, bringing back to the stage a hybrid opera that won the first Tony Award for Best Original Score in history.
New York, on a sweltering street on Manhattan’s East Side. Young Rose Maurrant tries to escape the stifling atmosphere of her family life and seeks a better future with her neighbour, Sam Kaplan; whilst rumours of infidelity swirl around her mother, Anna Maurrant. Amidst everyday romances, arguments and neighbourhood gossip, the tensions affecting the Maurrant family trigger a tragedy of epic proportions.
