Ermione
Rossini’s opera Ermione, which in its day baffled audiences with its sombre tone and unconventional structure, is now recognised as a masterpiece of dramatic intensity. Set after the Trojan War, it explores desire, unrequited love, jealousy and revenge. Ermione manipulates Orestes into murdering Pyrrhus, her unfaithful lover, before taking her own life. At the 2024 Rossini Opera Festival, Anastasia Bartoli, Enea Scala and Juan Diego Flórez gave acclaimed performances in a daring and visually striking production.
