The Queen of Spades
What drives us to submit ourselves to the unknown, to forget what we once felt, to abandon our conception of who we are? Tchaikovsky's operatic adaptation of Pushkin's quintessential Gothic tale has never looked or sounded better than in this new production by the Bavarian State Opera, with Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, winner of the Opus Klassik award for singer of the year 2023, in the role of Liza. Her performance in the same role at La Scala in 2022 ‘crowned the evening’, with Grigorian “exceptional”, ‘at her vocal and dramatic best... connecting directly with the audience’ (Bachtrack). The cast also features renowned American tenor Brandon Jovanovich in the title role of Hermann and the legendary Violeta Urmana as the Countess, whose secret leads Hermann to obsession and a tragic end for all.
This new production from one of the world's leading opera houses is conducted by young maestro Aziz Shokhakimov (music director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra) and directed by Benedict Andrews, a bold visionary who has also been acclaimed for his work in theatre and film.
