Le nozze di Figaro
This new production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin marks the beginning of a new Da Ponte cycle with Daniel Barenboim conducting and Vincent Huguet as stage director. Huguet, a student of Patrice Chéreau, has set the story in the 1980s. He wants the Da Ponte trilogy to be understood as a legend of sexual liberation and its consequences. Le nozze di Figaro is set as an action comedy about marital crises. The happy ending, Huguet knows, is a rotten spell: the next generation won't do any better.
The young cast, which includes Nadine Sierra, Elsa Dreisig, Gyula Orendt, and Riccardo Fassi, embraces this interpretation with immense enthusiasm.
