Charles Gounod’s gripping opera Roméo et Juliette unfolds the full intensity of its music in this production at the Teatro Real, featuring Carlo Rizzi’s impeccable musical direction and Thomas Jolly’s monumental staging. The stellar cast of singers transports us to a dark Verona, with standout performances from the stars Nadine Sierra as Juliette and Javier Camarena as Roméo.
The story is based on William Shakespeare’s immortal drama about literature’s most famous secret romance, in which Roméo and Juliette fall victim to the destructive rivalry and age-old hatred between the Montague and Capulet families. A musical gem of French opera, it stands out for arias such as Juliette’s vibrant waltz ‘Je veux vivre’.
